Debian
Debian is one of the most commonly used and oldest Linux distributions. Amongst others, the successful Ubuntu operating system is based on a version of Debian.
More than 1,000 developers all over the world are currently working on its further development, and are democratically organised. Regular elections are held for this, and the basis for cooperation is regulated in the Debian Constitution. Basically, anyone can take part in the development since the source code is public. New members however have to pass the “new member process”, in which the respective qualifications are tested. It is also ensured that they agree to the ideology underlying Debian.
Unequalled program diversity
Thanks to the large team and to its wide distribution, Debian offers a massive selection of program packages. Each individual program is free software. The Debian package administration system is one of the most efficient, sophisticated Linux versions. The responsible team always ensures prior to publication that there are no conflicts.
Debian now has a mature, user-friendly installer, so that beginners in the Linux world can migrate to a simple and particularly secure operating system.
Debian supports a large number of well-known architectures
Debian currently supports a large number of common architectures, such as alpha, amd64, armel, hppa, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390 and sparc. Debian also has the advantage that any software problems or security bugs which may occur are immediately made public, discussed and remedied within a few hours in most cases. This is part of the open source philosophy.
Although the source code is public as a matter of principle, security is a high priority. Changes to packages are digitally signed with a special key so that only authorised developers have access to the package data and no one can introduce malware. .
Since a Debian installation is extremely lean in comparison to other operating systems, the system’s running speed is virtually unbeaten by comparable systems. This considerably benefits stability, enabling many systems to run non-stop for many months under Debian without crashing. This makes Debian the ideal webserver.
