FreeBSD
FreeBSD is a free operating system largely developed for servers and appliances, but which can also be used, and indeed is used, on desktop systems. Today’s version was originally derived from the BSD software (Berkeley Software Distribution) of the University of California, Berkeley.
FreeBSD is completely open source; the source text of the entire operating system, that is the core, as well as of all services and programs, is open to all. This enables users to adjust FreeBSD to suit their individual requirements. The community consisting of thousands of developers makes FreeBSD one of the largest open source projects in the world.
FreeBSD offers a wide range of deployment opportunities.
FreeBSD is ideal for Internet or intranet servers as it works extremely reliably, even when subject to high loads. FreeBSD can be used in the following areas, amongst others:
- Internet services
- network services
- software development
- web surfing
- research platform
- image processing
- IRC
- bulletin board systems
The efficient use of memory should furthermore be particularly stressed, so that rapid reaction times for thousands of access processes can be dealt with at once. FreeBSD is compatible with a wide variety of systems. For instance, most x86-compatible platforms (including Pentium and Athlon), amd64-compatible (including Opteron, Athlon64 und EM64T), ARM, IA-64, PC-98, PowerPC and UltraSPARC architectures.
Security, speed and stability
The properties of FreeBSD make it an ideal platform for mail and Internet applications such as routers, root name servers or time servers. Large companies such as Yahoo also use FreeBSD to develop their embedded systems.
The architecture of FreeBSD also enables absolutely secure hosting for customers who do not trust one another. To do so, the networks are kept strictly apart, and secure pipelines are created. This means that confidentiality is not a problem and facilitates a controlled flow of information.
More than 24,000 ported applications and libraries
FreeBSD has at its fingertips a large, continually-growing number of programs. It is usually possible to state during installation what the intended deployment is, thus permitting a pre-selection of programs to be made which are then installed by default. Many packages are already available as binary files and can thus be installed directly from the installation medium.
